One year ago, in an effort to highlight the talents of my fellow Canadians, I created a monthly I Am Canadian Feature.
During this time, we have heard stories of travel, childhood memories, heartache and found some great new businesses.
This month is no different.
Introducing October’s “I Am Canadian” Feature…
Nolan Wilson Freelance!
I became a writer out of circumstance. With a Master Degree in Library Science behind me, I set out to have career in research, but once my initial contract ran out with the first company I worked for out of school, I was left without a job. And, it came out of left field, which left me unprepared for what to do next. This was the main event in my life that led me to becoming a blogger and a freelance writer.
With lots of time on my hands after hours of job hunting and with boredom setting in, I decided to start blogging. So, I decided to set up my own blog, something that I have never done before. And, I have never looked back since. Setting it up was so much easier than I thought. It literally took me about an hour and required way less technical know-how than I anticipated.
To me this proved that anyone can set up a blog. And, the best part is that you can do it for free! I had thought about setting up a blog for a long time, but never got around to it, mainly because I thought it would be too much of a time investment.
There is no shortage of people out there that read blogs all the time and think that it would be cool to have a blog of their own. You might be one of them. Let me be the first to tell you that you can do it! Having a blog has done wonders for me and it was the catalyst for my career as a freelance writer. Now it’s your turn!
Tips for starting your first blog
Okay, let’s get down to business. Here are a number of important tips to consider when starting your first blog:
- Determine your blogs purpose: Is it for personal use? Do you want to use it for business? Is it just for fun?
- Think about what you want to write about: The truth is that you can write about anything you want. It is your blog after all.
- Keep it simple to start: Don’t worry about getting too technical. Treat your first few posts as a way to get used to the blogging platform and play around with its features.
- Get involved in the blogging community: There is so much you can learn from being active in the blogging community. Start clicking links and reading other blog posts. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!
- Have fun with it: Be yourself and have fun with your blog. Write about whatever is on your mind.
When starting a blog remember that it is yours. It can serve as an online journal of personal thoughts, it can be used to sell your services, and it can be public or private.

One of the best things I did to grow as a blogger was to get involved in the blogging community. There is so much to learn and being part of a community really helps you find your way.

So true. We might not have met each other if we hadn’t gotten involved in our community. Friends make blogging twice as fun.

Thanks for all the tips! This is something that I’ve actually been considering and all this info is great!
I want to start but was terrified ty sooo much for this
Love it! I’ve thought about it and can say I have done it. However it was the last course I took for Marketing and Sales and it was tough. Mind you, I was provided with a list of topics to research etc. But, I wrote 2-3 posts per week and it was lots of work and definitely included the post/send fear!
