If You’re a Parent Then You Can Relate To This

child takes forever to get readyUncle Eric stopped by this morning. He doesn’t need an excuse but he happened to bring in the mail.As usual, I invited him in and offered to make him a coffee. Truth be told, I hadn’t had my daily fix so I was looking forward to having an excuse to make some (for someone other than just myself) and having the added bonus of adult company.

Ed’s away on business and talking to The Kids for days on end makes me feel like I really am on a boat that is caught in a whirlpool and being sucked to the bowels of the ocean depths.

One can hope sometimes.

So, I was kind of disappointed when he took a raincheck. He reminded me that today was the day that he was having his roof reshingled and he had to get back home.

The Kids could hardly contain their excitement.

Watching a roof be shingled is right up there with running headfirst into walls, unravelling not one but two rolls of toilet paper and putting cereal down the ducts. Note that milk was involved.

The gleam in their eyes looked like it might turn into tears. Who was I to keep them from this once in a lifetime learning opportunity?

So it was decided. We would get ready and head on over for “a day of fun”. The best part, I’d still get my coffee and maybe even score a bag of chips.

Pajamas were folded and put under their pillows, toys put back in their spots, hats and mittens were pulled out of storage, layers of clothing were put on and we were finally ready.

The short walk never gets tiring.

The dogs pull me the whole way, The Kids point out our neighbours Christmas tree lights (they’re on all year), warn me about the lions lurking in the tall grass and we always stop and say hi to the horses.

As we rounded the bend, we still couldn’t see Uncle Erics roof. We stopped to listen for any foreign sounds but heard nothing. The anticipation was mounting. His house came into view and…

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. What?

Apparently people can shingle a roof quicker then The Kids can get ready in the morning.

If you haven’t seen this skit by Michael McIntyre, this post will start to make sense at around 45 seconds. Know that you are not the only one whose child takes forever to get ready. Brilliant.

a brilliant comedian, I laughed until tears were rolling down my face. I’ve now sent the clip to my children who either have children or are expecting one.

      Dear Redhead,

I am writing a post right this very minute. About this very thing. I was the neighbour that you thought you were and that I didn’t want. Make sense? P.S. Hilarious!

I found your post at Friendship Friday. Thanks for a good laugh 🙂 He forgot one thing though – before you can find and put on the shoes, you first have to find the socks, (preferably a matching pair, if possible) and get them on both feet. That’s not asking too much, is it? It seems to be too much in our house some days 😉

Too funny..and true…It seems I never get anywhere on time. And as soon as I mention to get stuff on to leave my daughter runs off somewhere and hurts herself…

too funny! If we do manage to get ready to leave the house…..the second I open the door is when I realize my bag has been emptied by someone, wallet is AWOL.

    Haha!

I continue to be amazed at how long it can take me to get ready in the morning now that I have a little one to get ready too. 🙂
