After 16 weeks and 1 day living in Mexico, we’re finally back in Canada. This was the longest time we’ve been in Mexico since 2008. By about 3 weeks.
We stayed longer this year because the weather was amazing there (not so much in Canada but I don’t need to tell you that) and we didn’t need to be back in Canada. When you drive 5,000km (each way) to get somewhere, you want to get every last second out of it. In case you missed something,
Here’s our trip in a nutshell…
It all began on December 16 with a 3-country, 5,000km, and 4-day journey.
We opened up our Bazar (again), celebrated the Dia De Reyes, enjoyed a 12-day visit from Uncle Andrew
We shared some Valentine’s Day Crafts for Kids and some LEGO Movie Crafts using recycled products.
I showed you some pictures of a new kind of avocado (I think), what’s cooking in my oven, how to tell the difference between organic and inorganic, discovered a part of Canada in Mexico, our eyes had a feast of colours and we showed you the Cathedral Bells from the 16th century.
An Honourary Mexican Award was bestowed upon me, discussed the caloric content of fried grasshoppers (yes, you read that correctly, grasshoppers) and Ed and I had a romantic dinner with Olivieri Pasta while 5,000km apart.
Shared 5 myths about Mexico (there are so many more to come), and enjoyed an all Canadian breakfast with maple syrup and french toast made from Dempsters Bread.
We got locked INSIDE our house (just as terrifying as getting locked out), showed you what it’s like to live in an old Doctors Office (complete with the staircase to nowhere), and I provided many reasons why you shouldn’t leave the house in your pajamas (trust me on this one).
Took some videos and vines of The Kids “playing” with their neighbours, a bucket full of maggots and Max’s first dig to China.
The Kids got a delivery of some much needed clothes from FlipSize, which was great because then they had something to wear to school. Well, Artemis did. Max not so much.
After almost 18 years with us, our dear Aries the Cat passed away and is buried in our backyard in Mexico.
Artemis almost had a dentist appointment but not before she went to the hospital. and we didn’t have medical insurance
Right before we left for Canada, our Mexican neighbour gifted us Bubba the Goldfish who lived 24 hours and then two days after that, Artemis showed up with Nemo the Goldfish who lived just 18 hours. I am so done with Goldfish.
We made it back to Canada in record time and under budget (usually costs us $900USD each way). Our house was just as we left it. The snow hadn’t even been plowed out of the driveway.

I am only able to get out there for a week to ten days a year due to my work schedule, I wish I could spend a long period as you do, but I just love being out there.. It’s such a different way of life 🙂

My aunt owns a condo in Nuevo Vallarta so that was our home base. We did lots of day trips, visited so many little towns. We all loved it so much and hope we can do it again soon (maybe even for longer!) Where do you go? I can’t believe you drive there!

We’re in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas. High in the mountains about 2 hours from the Guatemalan border. We drive so that I can bring stuff (also referred to as junk)and the two (once three) animals. It costs us less than $2,000 to drive (return) and flying would cost around $10,000. Let me know if you’re ever in the neighbourhood.

If you fly and are not involved in politics, religion or drugs, you’re risk of getting in trouble is really low. I mean, bad things can happen but they can happen anywhere. We drive so there is a bit more of a risk but not enough to deter us from going. Note that we are not risk takers.
