Where Do You Get Your Home Decor Inspiration?

Sunlight Laundry Detergent-600When you think about your home, the place in which you live, learn and thrive, what inspires you?

My inspiration comes from many different sources such as; Pinterest*, Magazine, Store Displays, Blogs, Local newspapers and even my friends homes. Have you ever found yourself inspired by a product? That’s exactly what happened to me in Mexico.

In case you didn’t know, we drive to Mexico. After loading two adults, two kids, two dogs and a cat into our van, space is limited. Really limited. But not so much that I can’t find room for my Sunlight.

Yes, I bring a container of Sunlight laundry detergent to Mexico.

And here are a few reasons why…

1. Liquid detergents are easier on our septic system,**
2. It’s specially formulated for use with cold water***,
3. One jug lasts me the entire trip and it’s less expensive than products I can buy locally,
4. Last but not least I like to know that my clothes are clean and that they smell fresh.

So, when I was presented with the idea to update my Mexican Laundry Room I was embarrassed. How was it that the walls were bare, things were falling everywhere and I didn’t even have a laundry basket. To top it off, in a country that knows colour, my room was completely grey.

Before my Sunlight Laundry Room Makeover

I found my inspiration in Sunlight.

I headed to the local market with the thoughts; clean, crisp, bright, fresh, and of course my favourite colour… Yellow.

I started with the walls and purchased hangings (and/or table mats) that are handmade with a loom and then embellished with hand stitched flowers. So much time and effort goes into these works of art and every time I see them, I smile.

After my Sunlight Laundry Room Makeover

Then I purchased a few colourful containers to help clean-up some of junk that had accumulated and of course a new laundry basket. Reuse is one of my favourite words (along with Reduce and Recycle) so I converted the container into a flower vase.

After my Sunlight Laundry Room Makeover

Voila! My “Drab to Fab” transformation!

While I understand that you may not have access to Mexican handicrafts, there are lots of ways that you can get creative by getting your kids involved, picking an accent colour or even a favourite product like I did.

What’s home decor? I am lucky if I can get my laundry done…but Sunlight does make it smell fresh and clean (especially now that we can hang things on the line outside!).

Oh I love those hangings!! I have a set on my table all through the winter. Keeps me thinking of Spring. You’ve taken me back to San Cristobal memories once again. The best market I visited in Mexico.

I usually get inspiration from my daughters (now Adults), other family homes and from blogs. I love to try out some new ideas every now and then to spruce up a room. I think you did extremely weil with your laundry room.

Love the bright yellow vase for your flowers! Indeed drab to fab! I get my inspiration from looking in people windows as I walk by, and magazines, pinterest for sure! I am inspired by others and their clever ideas as well! Inspires me to find different ways to use items and re-purpose or up-cycled them.

I have family living in Portugal and I’m so inspired by the colours and vibrancy of that country that I’ve been trying to introduce the look into my home. I am not Portuguese myself but I find it very comforting and homey.

I’ve always looked at magazines as long as I can remember and now more on-line sites is where I get my inspiration from. But there is still something about a great magazine with pages. Pinterest is so cool, so many great ideas for sure. Also from displays in-store or in catalogues. I think you did a great job with your laundry room!

That is a big change! I love how bright and cheerful it is now. It looked sort of dreary before…

Looks like a happy place now as before it really needed some color and now the baskets add a great touch. Good for storage too especially with things you find in pockets as least I always do when doing the family laundry.

I grab inspiration from the outdoors. I love changing things up for the different seasons. I also look at Pinterest for ways to do this on a budget!
