Will This Barbie Meet the Same Fate?

Will This Barbie Meet The Same Fate? After four and a half years, it finally happened.

Artemis got a Barbie.

Well actually, she bought a bag containing two dolls. One was obviously a Barbie and the other was a Barbie knockoff. She held them to her chest the whole way home and the moment we crossed the threshold, she tore the plastic bag open like it was a candy bar and tossed the knockoff into the corner never to be glanced at again. As for the real Barbie, she was officially named “Princess Barbie” and immediately gained top spot at the head of the bed.

I’m amazed that Artemis knew the difference between the real and fake Barbie in the first place. At playgroup they don’t have Barbie, we don’t have cable, none of her friends have Barbie and I’ve never shared about my one and only Barbie experience (herein referred to as the “Barbie Decapitation Debacle”). So, when I saw her humming along while doing Barbie’s hair and outfit in preparation for the party, I was happy for her.

The fact that she wanted a Barbie in the first place didn’t surprise me in the least.

She is a girlie-girl who has been asking to wear make-up, high heels and dresses since she could talk. I have no idea where she got it from because I’ve only worn makeup once in my life (well, besides Las Vegas but you know what they say about things that happen in Las Vegas…). Fortunately, I’ve so far managed to convince her not to pierce her ears but I’ll lose that battle sooner rather than later. I’ll save that for another blog post.

I guess now is as good a time as any to explain the Barbie Decapitation Debacle.

When I was a young girl, my parents bought me a Barbie. I’m not sure whether I asked for her or if they just assumed that I wanted one but after the dust had settled, Barbie had been decapitated and left for trash. Needless to say, that was the last Barbie that I got. And so ends the Barbie Decapitation Debacle. Or so I thought…

About 15 minutes later, I nearly choked on my tea when I saw Artemis attempting to rip the head off her Barbie.

And the cycle continues.

Did You or Your Daughter Love Barbie or Rip Her Head Off?

P.S. I totally forgot about the time that I Cut Off All My Hair and Gave It To Barbie.
P.P.S. I have nothing against Barbie.

🙂 It always amazes me how kids seem to ‘know’ toys.. boys and cars, same sort of thing.. they just seem to gravitate towards them!

I have fond memories, myself, of playing Barbie as a child (No Kens – we had NKOTB dolls that were a good 7 inches taller than the Barbies) with my sister; doing their hair (and inevitably cutting it) and dressing them up..

I loved Barbie as a kid. Actually I still have her somewhere, and that is 50+ years later. She hasn’t aged a bit. lol. Our son and daughter played with her briefly, but not like me. I used to save my allowance to buy those fancy ball gowns. (not sure where Barbie was going all the time) We have moved several times, and not even sure where Barbie is hidden right now. Might just have to go look for her……..

It’s funny that you would ask that question… I actually have a picture from when I was little, where I was sitting in the bath tub and I am surrounded by hundreds (okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little but there were a lot) of Barbie heads, bodies and broken limbs. I’m not sure why we do the things that we do when we are kids. Oh yah, and they were almost bald because I usd to play hairdresser with them.

No Barbies here yet, not sure I’d care much for even saying her name in my house. Never was, and might never be a fan. So far, my little girl doesn’t have too many girlie girl toys, other than the odd Dora item grandma has given her. I would however love for her to have a tea set.
When I was a kid, I watched my older sister play with Barbie dolls, especially when friends were over. But I never had an interest other than to ask who cut off Barbie’s hair on a certain doll. I also remember pulling off a head once, but cramming it back on again.
And I think there is one lone Barbie leg in a box somewhere that my son found at a park when he was 5.

I don’t think I ripped the heads off my Barbies, and neither have my kids. I can’t tell you what I did with my Barbies. lol

We had a radiator in the basement and I would melt what hair I hadn’t cut with scissors on the radiator. Hmm!

Maybe it’s instincts??? I mean the whole gravitating towards Barbie and other actual toys. I don’t think I did anything extreme with Barbie, except maybe cut up her clothes to restyle it.

When my sister and I were younger we did indeed have barbies (lots and lots of barbies and barbie accessories) along with my mom’s vintage barbie stuff from when her and her sisters were younger. We spend HOURS playing barbies in the basement. I’m pretty sure my sister liked to decapitate AND de-limb a few of her barbies…

I just gave mine haircuts and tattoos. LOL

I am an older senior so my girls did not have Barbies, just regular dolls that they loved and played with until, at the age of 12 or 13, they donated their dolls to their cousin because they decided they were too old for dolls.
They liked to give their dolls haircuts. I could not decide whether they were bored or wanted to see how the dolls looked with shorter hair.

I just loved this article – and nearly choked on my coffee, on reading the last 2 sentences! 🙂

Never. My Barbies were a treasured item, lots of them were hand me downs with handmade clothes from when my mom and aunt were kids. My brother though liked to give haircuts and decapitate my dolls, he also liked to punch out the windows in the dollhouse that my mom made me.
