Proof That I’m Smarter Than My Dog

Smarter Than The Dog Pasta Shells

If you don’t Follow me on Facebook then you won’t know that Reina’s recurring infection appeared this week so I had to take her to the vet. Everything was as it should be (except for the infection) and she was deemed to be in tip-top shape for a 13-year old with an arthritic and robotic knee.

Part of her recovery requires her to be on antibiotics so for two days, I’ve been fighting with her trying to get her to open her mouth* and/or find ways to hide the pill inside food.

Pancakes worked for awhile but then they got stale. I thought that oatmeal would be a hit but she completely ignored it. And then, I saw them. Hidden in the back of the fridge just begging to be pulled out… the pasta shells that I usually stuff with tuna for The Kids lunches. As you can see, the pill fit perfectly and she was none the wiser.

Proof that I’m smarter than my dog… for now.

Have Any Proof of Your Superiority?

* Reina is getting very stubborn in her old age and if she doesn’t want to open her mouth, there is nothing you can do to make her. Trust me, I tried. Like the time I offered her a bone and she briefly opened her mouth but then saw my hand coming in for a delivery and closed it before I could get the pill in there. I guess I’m not smarter than her…

P.S. If you don’t follow me on Facebook, why not!? You can get caught up on the Reina Saga Here.

Haha you do what you have to do 🙂 My old dog was sneaky – you could hide a pill in a meatball and he’d eat the meat ball and seconds later spit the pill out!

          Dear Treen,

What dog food are you buying or do you have to make your own? For the first 1.5 years that we had Phoenix, I had to make his from scratch.

Have you tried Petcurean? They don’t have any fillers and have a wide variety of meat options like fish. Reina is on their food now and loves it. You can find out more here -> http://www.journeysofthezoo.com/?s=petcurean

          Besos Sarah.

Loved the cheese comment 🙂 It’s not easy getting animals to take medication, even kids are easier I think – you just stand there with your arms folded and a rolling pin in one hand 😉

We had to give our dog a pill last week and he took it pretty easily, but then again he’s still young. I did however have to give one of our rabbits antibiotics many years ago. Trying to get the syringe in the rabbits mouth and actually get her to take the medicine was a nightmare.

That’s a great idea. Unfortunately, our dog, Dexter, seems to be able to find a “needle in a haystack” ie he would so manage to find and spit the pill out as he seems to be able to do. Luckily, I’ve learned to do the side slip through his back teeth. I can so feel your pain though:).

Omg, I totally remember those fights! It was usually the cats though. Animals are more clever than we give credit for. Our cats will only eat certain pieces of their food despite it all smelling & looking the same. I’ve even seen animals eat the food but spit out the pill.
Great job finding a solution. Hoping it’ll work longer than the oatmeal.
