You Know You Live in Canada When…

You Know You Live in Canada When HumourLast week, the weather in Ontario was +553 degrees (note that it was probably closer to 35 degrees celcuis but you get my drift) and this week it was -100 (see previous note and insert 10 degrees instead). Bottom line, the weather is all over the board. There’s a saying that if you don’t like the weather in Canada, wait 5 minutes and it will completely change.

This week was like that. One day I had the air conditioning blasting the whole day and the next I turned on the heat. Yes, I turned on the heat in the Summer. If you live in Canada then you’re shaking your head in the affirmative right now. It’s just the way things are around here.

I thought that it would be fun to see what everyone else had to say so I posted the statement “You Know You Live in Canada When… ” on my Facebook Page and asked for people to share their thoughts.

The comments were so funny and true that I couldn’t just leave it at that and I thought you would appreciate them too. Here they are in all their truth and hilarity (You can go here to see the actual post).

You Know You Live in Canada When…

  • You plan your kid’s Halloween costumes to fit over a snow suit… Or is that just a Saskatchewan thing? ~ Shayna M. from Mommy Outside the Box
  • When you say “I’m going to Timmies” and people don’t ask “Timmy who? ~ Amanda B.
  • “eh” says it all ~ Kathie L.
  • One part of Canada is apparently turning on their heat when I’ve got my air conditioning full blast ~ Heather H.
  • You know you live in Canada when you talk about both of our seasons, Winter & Construction ~ Heather S.
  • You know you live in Canada when people where shorts when it’s 10C and raining ~ Debbie S.
  • Only in Canada will you use your air conditioner and put the heat on all in one day ~ Tracy D.
  • McDonald’s has maple bacon poutine on the menu ~ Michelle K.
  • You get confused when you see money that’s all the same colour ~ Iulia Z.
  • You have a drawer full of Canadian Tire Money ~ Shayna M.
  • The last letter of the English alphabet is pronounced “Zed” Steph B.
  • Someone lets you in front of them in the grocery line because you only have one item ~ Salexis
  • You know you’re from Canada when you can get snow in July, eh? Tricia H.
  • When visitors ask for direction and they don’t know the Timmies landmarks on the corners ~ Bailey D.
  • You say bacon when you really mean back bacon ~ Paresh P.
  • You know you live in Canada when it’s a sunny Friday, and Vancouverites are on the patio; with blankets! ~ Sara L.
  • You know you’re Canadian when you’re told that you say “aboot” rather than “about!” ~ Lindsey E.
  • You know you live in Canada when everyone on the street says SORRY for walking in front of you ~ Al J.

This last one reminds me of a joke I know… A man will win a prize if he can determine which of the three people in the room is a Canadian. He walks up to each of them and steps on their foot. The person that says sorry to HIM is the Canadian.

There were various other comments talking about how they’ve had to turn on their car seat warmers, put on slippers and turn on the heat also.

Note that if anyone would like their comment removed, please leave a comment below letting me know. I assumed that since you posted it in a public forum (a.k.a. Facebook) that you wouldn’t mind me using it for a blog post with credit given. When I originally posted the question, I had no idea that it would turn into a blog post but the comments were just too good to pass up. Thanks to everyone for contributing.

When I moved from Ontario to BC everyone here thought it weird that I said aboot rather than about. They thought I said Out and House weird too so I just started to say about the outhouse for people when they wanted to hear my “accent”..

Yes I agree, us Canadians are forever apologizing, saying sorry for everything, even if it’s not our fault! And we also say thanks for everything, even if we don’t need to.

You know you live in Canada when Vancouverites are tanning in bathing suits in May; it’s not NEARLY hot enough, but sunshine! Look, the sun! 🙂 We have to get out in it.

You know you live in Canada when you buy those good winter gloves like in September, because you don’t want to miss out on selection, or have to go hunting when you need them that cold morning. Last year I couldn’t find kids mitts anywhere in this town.

      Dear Lily,

Good to know that Canadians make good money friends!

My sales tax is 13% too but I try and avoid it wherever possible by buying items used and shopping at our local charity thrift store (they don’t charge any taxes!).

Looking forward to finding out more ways to save on your blog. Maybe your Canadian friend wants to do a guest post and share all her solutions for getting around her financial pet peeves. I’d be interested!

      Besos Sarah.
