Avery’s Act of Kindness Fundraiser for an NICU Incubator

Sunnybrook Incubator Fundraiser Averys Hands Unfortunately, life doesn’t always work out the way you planned it.

When I was 25 weeks pregnant with Triplets, Baby A, Alexanders’ membranes ruptured (PROM).

While this can signal impending labour, for reasons unknown, I didn’t end up going into premature labour until 30 weeks, 3 days. Yes, the days matter.

The planned (but unscheduled) C-section went as expected and all The Kids required support of some kind or another. Since they were so little 2.5-3.5lbs, they spent the first weeks of their lives in incubators.

Except for Alexander. After nine days of life, he contracted an infection (NEC) and passed away. Unfortunately, we are not the only ones that have lost a child.

Baby Avery was born three months premature at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and weighed 2lbs 12 oz. Baby Avery was cared for by some of the best doctors and nurses in Canada, but could not over come Primary Pulmonary Hypertension Disease. After 11 unforgettable days with her family by her side, she passed away.

My heart breaks for Avery and her family. I won’t say that I know what they’re going through as every loss is different, however, I know that not a day will go by where they don’t think of her. I also understand the need to do something in your child’s honour, to make something good (?) come of such a tragic situation. And that is exactly what Avery’s family is doing.

NICU Incubators Avery’s Act of Kindness is working to raise $10,000 to go towards an incubator for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital.

These incubators are the first home for many preemies providing a stable environment that controls the heat, humidity, and oxygen for the baby. This equipment will help many more babies like Avery in the future.

we take life and the gift of having children so for granted sometimes… what a reminder that life is fragile and that we should be so thankful for the children we do have.
