An adult tooth!
Turns out that it’s growing in behind her baby teeth and she didn’t even know that the tooth was there until I told her. Good news is that it clearly doesn’t hurt her. Bad news is that I have visions of having to remortgage our house for dental work.
After temporarily freaking out (that would be me, she thinks that it’s awesome), we Googled it and turns out that it happens in 10% of cases. Apparently we should wait 2-3 weeks and hopefully the baby teeth will fall out. If not, go to a dentist.
What Would/Did You Do?
P.P.S. Have any variations on the tooth fairy?
P.P.P.S. Artemis’ “Favourite Part of The Day” was getting to tell her teacher and class mates that she had an adult tooth coming in. Max and her are the oldest kids in the class so it turns out that she is the first one to get a tooth in. One girl has lost a baby tooth but doesn’t yet have an adult tooth coming in. Max says that it’s because “she eats too much candy”. Not sure who he heard that from…

The Tooth Fairy has gotten better since I was a kid getting a quarter… lol…
Hope it falls out by itself, but it should so try not to stress.

Dear Freda,
I’ve been getting Artemis to wiggle her tooth whenever I remember. Hoping I don’t need to remortgage the house to pay for braces…

Yes, it might just push that baby tooth right out as it comes in more. My kids didn’t have that happen, but I know a lot of kids do! If not…..well, the dentist might have to pull it 🙁 Though with all the numbing stuff they’ve got now, she’ll be good. The tooth fairy spoils kids way too much! I say a buck or less! They’ve got too many teeth for more than that 🙂

Dear Christy,
I won’t tell Artemis that the tooth fairy brings any money if you don’t…

The tooth fairy in our house bring $2. I have heard stories from others where the tooth fairy is way too rich for my liking! $20 for the first tooth and $5 a tooth after that. My kids have way too many tooth to be getting that much.
Dear Tara,
I was trying to get away with paying a dime. My kids will be dropping off their teeth at your place.

My 8 year old has an adult tooth coming in behind a very loose baby tooth right now too! The orthodontist said its fine and should push the baby tooth out 🙂
As for the tooth fairy, I fired her and told her not to pay my kids for losing things haha With four of them losing teeth and one with a retainer and the potential for braces there is no way I could afford her going rate!! 🙂
Dear Tabitha,
We’re on the same page. I’m not even telling the tooth fairy where we live.

This has happened to K with a few of her teeth now. We just leave it.. believe it or not it does even itself out! Toothfairy here gives $2.00 per tooth!
Dear Darlene,
I’ve only heard from one person that said that the tooth didn’t work itself out. Fingers crossed.
$2 a tooth x 20 teeth x 2 kids. I’m going to need to take out a loan!

I’d probably freak, lol. Nowadays kids are maturing earlier than we were that age & everyone grows and learns at their own pace.
We’ve yet to deal with the tooth fairy but $2 seems reasonable as long as they don’t lose 10 at a time 😉

Dear Jason,
That works out to $40 a mouth! Pretty sure that Max would be pulling his out for that amount 😉

This is how my tooth used to be when I was little. The adult one would grow before the baby one fell. I’m surprised I didn’t end up needing braces. Sadly my son has the same issue and from the look of it he will be needing braces for sure. =(
Dear Marielle,
Every time I wiggle Artemis’ tooth I start calculating how we’re going to pay for braces (I needed them, my husband did not).
How long did it take for your baby tooth to eventually fall out? Thanks for sharing your story.

Everyone in my family tend to have the adult teeth grow first. But usually when that happens, the baby tooth is starting to wiggle. For me it usually falls within a week sometimes longer. My dad used to tell me not to play with my gums after my tooth falls out (with my tongue). My sister used to do that and ended up with a bit of space between all her from teeth. My son’s front tooth is totally messed up because of the adult teeth growing in the back when the baby teeth wasn’t ready to fall. Pretty sure there’s nothing that can be done other than braces. Wish I had more tips for you.

Effective immediately, I’m putting money away in The Kids piggy bank for braces.

Oh goodness, If I was her age and I found out I was growing a tooth like that I’d be pretty darn proud of it too! LOL Ah how kids are so easily amazed 🙂 I hope that everything went smoothly and that she got a visit from the Tooth Fairy 😉

This happened to us. My youngest actually had an extra tooth at one point that had to be removed so I thought this was happening again. It wasn’t an extra tooth just an adult tooth coming in. We took our to the dentist and he removed the baby tooth. We had a great dentist so our kids never minded seeing him.
Dear Loriag,
It took six months but Artemis’ two baby teeth finally feel out and nine months later, her two bottom teeth have been (naturallu) pushed forward by her tongue and you never would know that she had shark teeth.
