Once upon a time, in a grand kingdom under the sea ruled by the powerful King Triton, there was a sixteen-year-old young girl named Ariel. But Ariel was no ordinary girl. She was a princess and mermaid and she had a best friend named Flounder who was, well, a flounder!

The Little Mermaid and three other Disney’s best movies were the featured stories at the Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy, which opened to a very warm reception at the Canadian Tire Centre despite the freezing cold temperature outside. Full of bustling adults and excited children, the CTC was alive and joyous with little munchkins dressed up as Queen Elsa, Princess Anna, Olaf and many other beloved Disney characters.

The excitement started as soon as we entered the stadium as we were greeted with a wide of array of Disney merchandise and paraphernalia including a photo booth with a life-size Tinker Bell. The magic didn’t stop there as there was still skating to be seen and as soon as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy skated their way into centre ice, we were ready to embark on their journey to the many worlds of fantasy.

THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: LIGHTNING MCQUEEN FROM CARS

The Disney on Ice adventure begins with the four lovable Disney characters, right on the start of their trip, get a rescue and assistance from the coolest cars direct from Radiator Springs when their roadster broke down. Do you remember Mater, Sally and of course, Lightning McQueen? These shiny cars were fast and furious as they zoom right through with their incredible, adrenaline-fueled performance.

SWIM UNDER THE SEA WITH ARIEL

The very first stop takes us to the magical world of the deep blue sea, or rather, under the sea. As the arena turns to a soft hue of blue, Sebastien comes running through looking for Ariel. Admittedly, this may be more exciting for adults than children considering the Little Mermaid was first released in 1989, everyone was awe-inspired by the beautiful choreography and the magnificent set.

WISHING FOR SPRING WITH TINKER BELL

Going back to land brings us all back to the woods, to the enchanted forest full of pretty little fairies. Amongst them was Tinker Bell, the dearly beloved fairy friend of Peter Pan. Tinker Bell and her sweet band of fairies may be what Ottawa exactly needs at the moment as they can bring, guess what… Spring!

THE TOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN WITH WOODY AND BUZZ

Although every segment was very well choreographed and professionally executed, it was perhaps the last world that was the one with the most elaborate design and number of skaters. After the intermission (which gave plenty more time for children and adults to get some concession food, it also provided another opportunity to re-visit the Disney merchandise stalls), Disney Pixar Film’s the Toy Story was the last but not the very least world to close the show.

With familiar and endearing characters like Buzz and Woody, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Barbie and Ken and more, the Toy Story crew, headed by no other than Andy of course, skated their way into everyone’s heart.

There were many little kids, with their sweet adorable faces covered in head to toe with everything that has to do with Frozen. Please note that the movie Frozen was not featured in this tour. Angelo and Erica did ask where Queen Elsa was, however, thankfully, they seemed to have forgotten momentarily when their Daddy Eric got them each a bag of Lighting McQueen and Tinker Bell cotton candy.

Overall, it was funny, endearing and overall entertaining for everyone. It also has a great balance between masculine and feminine undertones, as the show itself was not completely geared towards girls with princesses and fairies. It is definitely a must-see for the whole family. It is seeing all these Disney movies and characters come to life in such a fun-filled, uplifting and wonderfully charming on the ice spectacle!
